Home Ideas Magazine - March 2019
When implementing aged and natural elements into a home, there is a fine line between barn basic and rustic charm. This 3,386-square-foot ranch-style build by NRG Homes has perfectly paired refinement and casual simplicity. With 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and an oversized 4-stall garage, there were plenty of opportunities to implement cottage-style details into the open floor plan of this stunner.
This home, located in southern Sioux Falls, is full of elegance and light. From the moment you pull into the drive, you notice the large windows framed by a stone facade and calm complementary tones of paint. River rock edges the lush lawn and beautiful grey stacked stone pillars invite you onto the covered front porch. A window paneled front door, a shiplap ceiling, and a lantern esque light overhead predicts a modernized farmhouse feel before you’ve even entered the home.
As you step into the foyer, you are immediately impressed by the beautiful hardwood floors, white painted millwork, and the amount of light flooding into the open floor plan. White wainscoting accents125-year-old timber beams on the uniquely structured ceiling. A stone surround fireplace runs from floor to ceiling and is another strategically placed focal point in this expansive room.
Entertaining is made easy with a spacious open kitchen to the right. Staggered white painted cabinets and oversized subway tiles are both modern and simple. A gorgeous quartz island stretches out under wicker-like pendant lights and comfortably seats four. With upgraded appliances including a 5-burner gas stove below quartz tile inlay with a barnwood accent above, there is an exquisite blend of function and fashion. A corner pantry with built-in shelving will hold any chef’s favorite foods and tools.
The kitchen leads to a dining area that is highlighted by a barnwood tray ceiling. With ample windows and a large glass door that leads to an enormous covered composite deck, you can take in the quiet outdoors while entertaining.
The master bedroom is located on this side of the home, as well. With luscious carpet, a shiplap accent wall, and textured tray ceiling, this bedroom is calm and natural looking. The attached master bath is not to be outdone, though. With heated tile floors, handsome navy colored cabinets, gold accents, and an impeccably tiled shower, this bathroom is elegant and a continuation of the delicate blend of simple and chic. A large walk-in closet with custom built-ins completes this wing.
At the other end of the home, past the living room, are two bedrooms. With incredibly large windows, double door closets, plush carpeting, and well-chosen fixtures, occupants will surely be pleased with both the design and space.
Between the two bedrooms resides the main floor bath. An intricate tile pattern, tin-sided mirrors, partial wainscoting, teardrop glass lights, and textured wallpaper combine to enhance the rustic and chic feel. There’s plenty of storage for pretty linens in the beautiful oil-rubbed custom hutch. A bath/shower combo and two sinks in a dark stone counter add tons of functionality.
Should you be lucky enough to call this house your home, you’ll be pleased with the oversized 4-stall garage with heated epoxy floors. A large drop zone connects the garage to the rest of the home and has a custom barnwood locker system, textured tile floors, and a built-in hutch that is perfect for mail, keys, and items to transition from the outdoors in. Sharing this space is valuable closet space and laundry facilities. A barn door effortlessly closes off the multi-use mudroom from the living areas.
The light fixtures in this home truly heighten the feel of casual elegance by using metal, wood, and glass expertly. One such creation sits above the carpeted stairs that lead to the lower level with the help of wood posts and metal railings.
The downstairs is an extension of the thoughtful design throughout the main level. Natural light illuminates the open floor plan of the basement, making it feel anything but ordinary. There are no limits to what this space could be used for. Through the window at the back, you can see the expansive stamped concrete patio and included fire pit that is accessible through a door off the sitting area. A large family room to the right has a chest-high wainscoting perimeter, a gorgeous white custom shelving unit that frames a barnwood accent, and four deconstructed metal wall sconces.
Along the wall to the right is a wet bar that mixes trendy and useful with white painted cabinets, a full0size refrigerator, barnwood accent wall, sink, and floating shelves for stemware.
Two additional bedrooms on this level mirror the elegance and comfort of those upstairs. Each of them has plush carpet, considerable closet space, and large windows. And, just like upstairs, they share an incredible bathroom. Elevating the wow factor in this third bathroom is a beautiful wall of reclaimed wood, broad taupe colored tile floors, a circular copper mirror, and unique metal-and-glass light fixtures. Guests will enjoy the bath/shower combo, linen closet, and the contrast of a simple dark single countertop with wood base.
Not only does this home raise the bar in the area of design and look, but it also is built with efficiency in mind. All the windows throughout the home are energy efficient and the home was built with structural insulated panels that make it not only strong but comfortably efficient.
The infusion of rustic elements into this new build gives testament to the abilities of NRG Homes to understand the delicate balance that exists between basic and overdone. By blending the rustic and refined in fluid and intentional ways, they’ve created a familiar oasis in a contemporary home.
